What’s the Most Common Birthday Month?

Have you ever wondered which month of the year boasts the most renditions of β€œhappy birthday to you,” candles blown, parties thrown and birthday gifts torn open? It’s a fascinating topic that dives into patterns of human behavior, cultural practices, and even seasonal and weather influences. September is the most common birth month in the United States, but why? In this exploration, we’ll delve into some factors that may explain this phenomenon.

September Surprise: The Most Common Birthday Month

Have you ever noticed a disproportionate number of birthdays in September? It’s not just a coincidence! More babies are born every day in September across America than in any other month of the year. The most common birthday is Sept. 9. In second and third place are Sept. 19 and 12. In fact, the entire top 10 list is made of September birthdays between Sept. 9 and 20.

According to CDC statistics from 2010, these are the most common birth months:

  • An average of ~11,700 babies were born each day in September

  • An average of ~11,300 babies were born each day in August

  • An average of ~11,100 babies were born each day in July

So why is September the most common birth month? Turns out it has a lot to do with 9 months before that, particularly December, the month where couples are most likely to get engaged, and also to conceive. Studies have shown that conception rates are higher during the holiday season, particularly around December and January. This means more babies are conceived during these months, leading to a higher number of births in September. The festive atmosphere, holidays, vacations, time off from work, and family gatherings could contribute to this trend.

Some studies suggest that colder weather can lead to an increase in intimacy, potentially resulting in higher conception rates during the winter months. Another theory posits that weather may also play a role in our internal conditions, the shorter days and cooler temperatures perhaps making our reproductive systems more hospitable to conception.

Other parents plan their pregnancies, with some preferring their children to be born at specific times of the year. For example, having a baby in early September means the child will be among the oldest in their school year, which some believe may offer academic and social advantages.

What Are The Rarest Birthdays And Months To Be Born In?

Everyone’s birthday is special, but some may have an extra unique or uncommon day to celebrate. February is the least common birth month in the United States, in part because it is the shortest month of the year, with only 28 days or 29 during a leap year. In fact, the rarest birthday occurs on February 29, which has a 1 in 1,460 chance of occurring.

Surprisingly, most of the rarest birthdays don’t fall in February. Instead, many of them coincide with major holidays, such as Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Christmas Eve. This is most likely due to the fact that there are fewer inductions and cesarean sections scheduled during the holidays.

The least popular birth months? According to CDC statistics from 2010, it’s the winter months:

  • An average of ~10,800 babies were born each day in February

  • An average of ~10,400 babies were born each day in January

Another factor that makes February a rare birth month is that conception would have happened in May, when the weather is hot and the days are longer, fewer babies tend to be conceived.
