Outdoor Baby Shower Ideas

From nature inspired themes to unique venues and creative decor, having an outdoor baby shower can add an entirely different element to your party, making it even more memorable and magical. An outdoor gathering allows everyone to get some fresh air and sunlight, and opens the door to fun activities and ideas that you just couldn’t do inside.

Can You Have a Baby Shower Outdoors?

A baby shower is the first official celebration for your upcoming child, so it’s kind of a big deal! If you’re celebrating outside, you’ll want to consider the season and climate. If you live somewhere with a chance of rain, you’ll want to have an alternative in case the weather turns bad. If possible choose a venue with outdoor space as well as indoor space where you can move inside if necessary. Otherwise consider an event tent to protect your guests from the elements.

In addition to shelter from potential weather, you’ll want to ensure that you provide comfortable seating for your attendees, which can be tricky in an outdoor setting. If your venue doesn’t provide seating, you’ll want to rent or create places for guests to sit and relax. A casual dress code is also recommended so folks can feel comfortable being outdoors and easily able to participate in any planned games or activities.

Party games will have your guests on their feet, laughing and cheering on their friends and family. Having your shower outdoors allows for activities that just aren’t possible inside like giant Jenga or yard dominos, a treasure hunt, bocce ball, twister, cornhole or capture the flag. You’ll also want to plan for non-game activities like a photo station with fun props. Just make sure everything is appropriate for the outdoor elements.

Ideas for an Outdoor Baby Shower

Nowadays, many couples use their baby shower as a way to bring their families, friends and communities together as a couple. A coed baby shower is more inclusive than a traditional one that only includes female guests, and is an opportunity to celebrate both of the parents-to-be. A couples or co-ed shower includes guests of all genders which you’ll want to consider when choosing a theme for your gathering.

Deciding on a theme for your event is the very first step because it will determine the rest of the baby shower plans, including whether it makes sense to host it indoors or out. There are themes that are more gender oriented and revolve around pinks and blues, seasonal themes, and also lots of options that are more gender neutral. If a specific theme doesn’t appeal to you, then you can choose a color scheme, but really the options are endless!

  • Jungle or Animals: is gender neutral and can be anything from an African safari to teddy bears.

  • Baby-to-Bee: would be extra sweet hosted in an outdoor garden.

  • Building Our Nest: will help with your nursery and nesting phase, can include beautiful bird decor and is a perfect theme for an outdoor setting.

  • Sun or Rainbow: a shower featuring sunshine, clouds, raindrops and umbrellas is a lovely, easy to do outdoor theme that’s sure to make your party shine.

  • Moon and Stars: you could host your outdoor baby shower in the evening for a little star gazing, and pair it with a boho theme.

  • Growing Garden: abundant greenery, gardens and the great outdoors is a beautiful metaphor for your growing family.

  • Garden Tea Party: an afternoon tea is an elegant party theme perfect for an outdoor setting.

  • Little Pumpkin: if you’re hosting your outdoor shower in the fall, this is the perfect theme.

  • Winter Wonderland: climate permitting, a winter outdoor baby shower can be extra cool with a winter wonderland or snowflake theme.

Once you’ve chosen your theme or color palette, you can create the invites, which usually reflect the shower theme and start inviting guests! A benefit to having an outdoor shower means you get to take advantage of the natural beauty around you and likely keep decor very simple. Food ideas will need to be simple, able to be arranged outdoors and easy to eat. You can choose to incorporate your colors or theme into the food and favors or not, and the outdoor backdrop will make everything even more special and unique.
